Fist of God (MSTRKRFT Album Review)

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Fist of God (2009)

Finally, after a 3 year hiatus MSTRKRFT release their second album, Fist of God! I loved their first album, The Looks - it is probably one of my most played albums of the last couple of years and combined all of the ferocity I had grown accustomed to from Keeler (formerly of Death From Above 1979) with a new robotic, dancy edge.

Their new albums features many collaborations, including songs with Gostface Killah, N.O.R.E. and Lil’ Mo and they have combined to produce some very good tracks. A very powerful, synthesizer punch comes from nearly every track as per most MSTRKRFT songs, however there are some more lyrical songs, and a couple of more melodic additions. Stand out songs for me are, Bounce, Click Click It Ain’t Love and Heartbreaker, but it all is a great listen. The only problem I have with the album is that I am slightly unsure of the direction they are heading - there are elements of rock, electro, house and rap and they all come together with a slight element of confusion. I feel that it’s predecessor, The Looks remains the better album, however they both deserve a purchase - Brilliant!

7.8/10

Invaders Must Die (The Prodigy Album Review)

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

IMD Cover

“Invaders Must Die” - it is, for me, one of those releases that stands out above pretty much anything else. The Prodigy have a tradition for lengthy gaps between albums (a lovely 5 years this time) but manage to pull off a great LP each time. You could almost say it’s well worth the wait, however I hate waiting for releases that are this good (how can you tell I’m a huge Prodigy fan!). I first heard that they were to release a new album last year and managed to hear the first single, Invaders Must Die which gave me an instantly good first impression. A hard-hitting song with early Prodigy sounds, mixed with the more contemporary music scene. This basically sums up their album to be honest. A very hard-hitting album that has a lot of influences from their early music, yet, has been brought up to the more modern standard.

The album progresses well with the second single, Omen and continues with some amazing tracks; Thunder, Colours and Warrior’s Dance to name a few. They are on tour at the moment and will be for another couple of months so I would try and get to a gig if you can - it will be epic! I can’t really say much more except… research and listen if you still aren’t sure and then buy this album! It is for me already the release of the year and one of the best albums I have personally heard in a long time.

Away From the Sea (Yuksek Album Review)

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

It’s been a long, anticipated wait for me, and when I heard that Yuksek’s first LP was being released in February I was straight online with my payment details at the ready! It was released on the 9th in the UK ad of course I received my copy on that day! Influences apparent in his numerous EP releases such as; Tonight, It Comes or The Wax, all come together to create an amazing collection of tracks - a lot of which are released/heard for the first time.

Away From The Sea

The track listing is as follows:

1. Break Ya
2. Tonight
3. A Certain Life
4. Extraball
5. Take A Ride
6. I Could Never Be A Dancer
7. So Far Away From The Sea
8. Little Dirty Trip
9. This Is Not Today
10. I Like To Play
11. So Down
12. Freak O Rocker
13. Eat My Bear / Tonight (Cover)

The album is more varied that expected actually, and include collaborations with Shitdisco, Chromeo and The Shoes. It starts well with the new track, “Break Ya”, and leads well into the familiar releases of “Tonight”, and “A Certain Life”. “Extraball” is the other single and I am very impressed with it - this is the start of the unknown for me, since nearly the rest of the album is, to my knowledge, unreleased before now. An extremely good album sure to be on my list for the year already. For any Yuksek or electro fan it is a must-have, and to be honest - anyone could buy and listen to this album! If anyone has any doubts then there’s a nice taster mix on his Myspace Profile at the moment.

South Central & MP3

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Giggle me timbers, what an unusual afternoon. I haven’t slept for that long in tiiiiiime.

Whats more; South Central’s debut CD “Owl Of Minerva” is due for release in December through Egregore Music. You should defintatly get your claws into it. I have had the chance to listen early and was pleasantly suprized. Bedroom rave. Yep yep, went straight into my five star ratings for my ipod and now assists me on many a commute.

Owl Of Minerva is a collection of South Central’s finest from the past two years, all the stuff you couldn’t get on CD or mp3 anywhere else. To date, South Central has remixed artists including Klaxons, Van She, The Whip, Metronomy, Shy Child, Maccabees and Shitdisco, the list goes on…

For me, the strongest tracks on the CD are ‘Golden Dawn’ and ‘Nothing Can Go Wrong’ - something about them touches me… and in an almost inappropriate way? They move me; interacting with my soul as well as my ear drums. I like them. They make me feel.

Do me a favor.. feast; MP3: South Central - Aeon

Hope all is well across everyone’s corners… Thanks for the emails from Russia, they were awesome ^_^ Keep them coming!

The Melodic One…

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

It’s that time of year again when Kitsuné Music release another brilliant compilation of the artists on their label. Kitsuné Music was created in 2002, and is part of the Kitsuné Fashion Label. Artists such as, Alan Braxe, autoKratz, Bloc Party, Boys Noize, Digitalism, Hadouken!, Klaxons, Simian Mobile Disco and many more have found themselves part of the Kitsuné entourage at some point.

I first heard about the record label about 2 years ago when I first heard Lo-Fi-Fnk’s: Change Channel and Metronomy’s track: This Could Be Beautiful emerge from the first Kitsuné Maison Compilation. I was instantly hooked and thinking back, was one of the first CD’s that really made me explore the apparent boom of electro sounds coming from Paris.

Kitsune Masion 6

Released on October 27th, the Kitsuné Maison Compilation 6 is tagged, “The Melodic One”. Lo-Fi-Fnk start the album nicely with their usual but more defined style, whilst Digitalism, Beni, autoKratz and many others carry you through the album at a nice pace with some great new music. It’s pretty similar to what you would expect from the Kitsuné Maison series except I found that a lot of the bands/artists had a more evolved and mature sound to when they first appeared on the scene. Kitsuné themselves say; “There is a Kitsuné sound, but it keeps on evolving towards always more melody. A sometimes aggressive, violent sound and sometimes throbbing, melancholic or all of that at once.”

More evolved or not, I am loving the new album and it fits in nicely to the past editions. Definitely worth a listen.

Late of the Pier - Album review

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Hii guys, Matt here after a long absence! It’s good to be back! :D

So since I last posted there’s been so much music floating about that i love… too much for one post. So I’m just going to centre on one band today: Late of the Pier!

Fantasy Black Channel

You may have heard of these guys, they have been releasing singles and demos since March 2007, and they have supported some awesome bands like Hadouken! and Justice on recent tour dates. If you haven’t heard of them, you should definitely check them out! Their debut album, Fantasy Black Channel was released in the UK in August, with a number of the singles they had previously released as well as their upcoming single ‘Bathroom Gurgle’.

I myself absolutely LOVE the album. Their self described ‘Thrash’ music is well summed up by the album art - hard to describe, yet utterly beautiful given the chance. Every track could be the stand-out track of the album in it’s own right, as every song is completely different to the next. Despite this, the album flows well, being gapless at the beginning. The intro ‘Hot Tent Blues’ leads well into ‘Broken’, an obvious choice for the first track due to its extreme catchiness.

The previously released singles, as you would expect, are amazing, and new tracks match their quality while perfectly complimenting the rest of the album. At 43 minutes long, the album is a perfect length to satisfy your synthpop cravings while not losing your attention.

It has everything an album should offer: great album art, a fantastic selection of music and of course, a hidden track at the end! Their new single, ‘Bathroom Gurgle’, is being re-released on October 2nd in the UK. Check it out on iTunes here. You should so buy it!!

The band is on tour at the moment so if you are near any of the venues then you should definitely get down there! Check out their myspace page for dates and venues.

Well that’s enough from me for today! Luu hasn’t got the internet at the moment, so I’m going to be taking over no doubt until she gets it back :) I’ll see you kids sooon!

Matt
