A mainstream music rant?
Well, I haven’t had a good rant about mainstream music for a while. So here it is.. I am going to look at the UK charts and talk about what I will admit is hot this summer….
There’s a sound I’ve been meaning to bring up for a while; Katy Perry… Radio1 have been raving about her song ‘I kissed a girl‘ for some time now. I was extremely skeptical at first, with the video and lyrics… it just made me think, oh great another one of these girls going for the title of ‘music industry sex idol’… I mean with those lyrics, who wouldn’t think that? It’s clearly going to appeal to the greasy 45+ men, right? But then I heard it a few more times…. and I think I’m almost ashamed to say, it’s won me over. Completely and utterly. I really can’t get enough of it.
Secondly, Dizzee Rascal and Calvin Harris? TUNE. Ah…. forget your English grammer skills for 3mins and 30seconds; ‘Dance Wiv Me‘. There’s nothing like cruising around in a cheap peice of s*** student car with no air conditioning, windows down, hair everywhere… listening to this. Ohh yes… How I love the summer charts.
Thirdly, Madonna. Again.. I was a little skeptical at first, but you’ve got to hand it to her… she is one sexy lady. The tune; ‘Give It 2 Me‘ drove me a little insane at first, but I love it 1min 10seconds in when Madonna kicks it rave style. A classy summer song that is mellow enough to play in the back garden loudly without upsetting the neighbors and still have a good little foolish rave to.
Now, Kid Rock; ‘All Summer Long‘.. I have to say, it doesn’t do it for me. I find myself not being content hearing him sing ‘sweet home Alabama..’. Surely it’s wrong to play this, then literally talk the line which people are waiting for? It doesn’t do it for me. I find myself not remembering what the track sounded like then singing and humming the the original song to myself afterwrds. Can a song really be good if you start singing the original afterwards? Well, I am swimming against the tide here as it seems to be doing something right, topping the singles charts here in the UK… but still, I am not won over.
Alphabeat, I love love them. ‘10,000 nights‘ rocks my socks in a slightly Disney’s High School Musical-esque slash Grease manor, which it probably shouldn’t? Either way I am loving getting my groove on. There aren’t enough male/female harmonies going on in tunes these days. Alphabeat do it for me… Word is all six of them live in the same house haha, good times….
Well that’s all right now… Get outside people!
And off into the sunshine I trot…
