American Band You Should Know: Tyler Read
Howdy doody folks!
This is the first of my weekly Wednesday contributions to Eyemaylisten. Every week, I’ll pick an American band that I *love love love* and think you should know about. Genres are not of much importance, and most of the bands will be relatively unknown. Hopefully you guys will trust my taste!
But first, a little bit about myself. My name is Vivian and I run an independent music and art publication based in Seattle, called REDEFINE. Late last year, REDEFINE got picked up by distributors here and is now distributed throughout the United States and Canada. No luck with Europe yet, but what can you do? Maybe someday. Well, enough about me. Let’s get this show on the road.
TYLER READ
Tyler Read is a band that I came across in the mail and had absolutely no expectations for. If anything, they had strikes against them. Their label, Immortal, has largely failed to release anything I’m really interested in. Their press release said that they were the band the world was “waiting for,” and generally, lofty statements like that never quite hold up. Things weren’t looking good for Tyler Read.
Amazingly, however, their debut album, Only Rock And Roll Can Save Us, instantly hooked me. I had it on repeat… at least a few dozen times in the first week. Initially, I felt a bit embarrassed about liking them so much — they’re kind of a corny blend of pop punk and classic rock and roll — but they instantly became by guiltiest pleasure and it got to a point where I had to resist the urge to listen to the album because it just wasn’t healthy. Now, a year and a half after the album’s release, I’m still ranting and raving about them, and completely convinced that the world NEEDS to know about them. Here’s step #4232: featuring Tyler Read on Eyemaylisten.
Go to http://www.myspace.com/tylerread and listen to them NOW (any song but “Private School Girls” — I hate that shit). Don’t even be discouraged by their somewhat goofy looks or the fact that they’re ridiculously on tour with Puddle of Mudd. They are good. Really. And then come back and tell me what you think.
